DEFY ANNOUNCES REGIONAL PARTNERSHIP WITH FC BARCELONA

Do you recall in this post when I asked you not to blink even for a second because Defy was going to make a historic announcement? Well, just a few hours ago the big revelation was made. Defy has announced a regional partnership with Spanish football club, FC Barcelona.

The partnership will compliment Defy’s Future Legends campaign which will officially be launched in May.  In collaboration with former South African defender Jimmy Tau, the Future Legends CSI campaign will aim at changing the lives of some of the underprivileged youths by giving them a shot at being legends, like the FC Barcelona players.

I attended the launch event for the partnership with FC Barcelona which was held on 28 March, at Soccer City Stadium in Johannesburg. At the event, I managed to corner Defy’s head of marketing, Cherisse Erwee, and she explained further what the partnership and the CSI initiative was about.

“The partnership involves us going around South Africa to scout for soccer talented kids and thereafter, we will be opening football coaching clinics to train them. Defy is going to spearhead the project with Jimmy Tau. As part of the experience, we will fly the young talents to Barcelona, give them the opportunity to meet the FC Barcelona team. Once they are back in South Africa, we will give them a chance to undergo trials in big local teams such Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates or Mamelodi Sundowns, ” Cherisse said.

WHY DEFY HAS PARTNERED WITH FC BARCELONA AND NOT ANY OTHER TEAM

Defy’s CEO Evren Albas, explained that this partnership was easy to forge because Defy’s sister company, Beko, already fostered a relationship in Europe several years ago, which Defy is now making a spin-off of in Africa. “Apart from that, Defy and FC Barcelona share a lot of similarities. We both believe in empowering the people and have always believed in delivering better to get the extra mile ahead.”

This is  Defy’s first partnership with a sports team and Defy expects to build more similar projects in future. The ultimate goal of Defy in terms of similar initiatives is to cover the continent as a whole just as Barcelona does.
