best remedies to treat and get rid of stretchmarks naturally

So, after writing about how to get rid of cellulite, I have been asked several times by readers if I can write on how to remove stretch marks fast. I am not surprised by this because most of us have stretch marks. There are different causes and types of stretch marks, and we are going to look at this, as well as the fastest way to get rid of stretch marks.

But is it possible to get rid of stretch marks? And if it is, what is the best way to get rid of stretch marks?

The Mayo clinic is quite clear on this subject and says that stretch marks can fade over time with treatment, but you cannot get rid of them completely unless you have them removed surgically.

It is very encouraging to learn that you can make stretch marks less visible using home remedies like toothpaste and onion, as well as other treatments like stretch mark removal creams and sometimes, surgery.

By the end of this guide on how to remove stretch marks fast, you will be able to determine which method to remove old stretch marks suits your situation best and how to prevent stretch marks.

What are stretch marks?

Stretch marks are stripes or lines that are formed when the connective tissue of the skin is stretched too quickly. Stretch marks are also made when the skin shrinks at an unusual rate.

What causes stretch marks?

Stretch marks mostly appear when one loses or gains a significant amount of weight.  In other cases, stretch marks can also be caused by either a person’s genetic makeup or stress levels. Stretch marks are not something that only women can get, men are also prone to stretch marks.

My stretch marks success story

My first stretch marks appeared on the back of my knees, I wasn’t that bothered by them because I had seen them on my mum too, so I was genetically prone to stretch marks. Fast forward to my first pregnancy tears later, I had a warehouse for lightning bolts on the side of my stomach and on the bum. Years later, my stripes are almost not visible because I used some of the remedies to remove stretch marks that I am about to share with you.

Types of stretch marks

There are different types and colours of stretch marks, and this varies from person to person. The most common type of stretch mark is the one that is formed when the skin tries to rebuild itself after collagen breakdown. The other types include stretch marks that are a result of pregnancy or puberty.

Stretch marks come in different shades, ranging from silver to black, brown to red, pink and even purple, all depending on the colour of your skin. They can appear on the buttocks, thighs, hips, arms, breasts and tummy.

How to remove stretch marks fast

There are different remedies that you can use to reduce the appearance of stretch marks. I have tried most of these methods, and while some have worked for me, they may not work for others and vice versa. For transparency, I will tell you what worked and what didn’t as we go along.

Best cream for old stretch marks- palmer’s cocoa butter

When it comes to reducing the appearance of stretch marks, nothing beats Palmer’s Cocoa Butter Formula. Your stretch marks will begin to fade away after about a month of daily use.

If you want to see quick results, use Palmer’s cocoa butter twice a day, in the morning and just before bed at night, and your stretch marks will be less noticeable in just two weeks.

I must also mention that the smell of cocoa butter is quite intense, you will either love it or hate it. I was kind of worried that I would be sneezing day and night while using the lotion, because of my allergies, but as it turned out, I was not affected at all.

The distinct scent aside, Palmer’s Cocoa butter works magically to remove stretch marks, and also works wonders on scars. I saw amazing results in just two weeks of using the lotion. If you are really bothered about stretch marks, this lotion is just what you need to make them disappear!

Use bio-oil to get rid of new stretch marks and scars

In the past, I tried Bio-Oil because a lot of people recommend it for reducing the appearance of old and new stretch marks, as well as scars. Bio-Oil works to prevent stretch marks for most people, and if I am being honest, it smells much better than cocoa butter.

A lot of people have been quite frustrated with Bio-Oil because it takes a while for you to start seeing results (much longer than cocoa butter).  I am not known for my patience so when I saw very little difference after a couple of weeks, I switch to Palmer’s Cocoa butter and the results were swift.  I would recommend Bio-Oil for reducing the appearance of stretch marks but mostly to pregnant women, or someone on a weight loss journey to prevent stretch marks.

During the time that I tried Bio-oil for stretch marks, my skin got really super soft and smooth and this is probably why I feel you should give it a try.

How to remove stretch marks fast  with home remedies

how to prevent stretch marks

I should have warned you earlier that it gets quite weird with some of the home remedies to remove stretch marks. The interesting thing about these crazy remedies is that they have actually worked for some people!

Toothpaste for stretch marks

I have observed that this remedy is highly recommended by a lot of YouTubers. From my own research, I have found that toothpaste is quite effective in shrinking and clearing zits almost overnight and I suppose this is where others have come from in terms of trying toothpaste on stretchmarks.

How to use toothpaste for stretchmarks

So from how I have observed toothpaste being used for stretch marks, all you have to do is take two pea-sized amounts of toothpaste and mix with a dab of petroleum jelly (also commonly known as Vaseline) and apply on the affected skin evenly at night and wash it off in the morning.

Coconut oil to remove stretch marks fast

There seems to be no problem that coconut oil can’t handle (well apart from money problems, of course). Coconut oil can be used for growing healthier hair, healthy cooking, and also as skin moisturiser. Getting rid of stretch marks is also one of the amazing uses of coconut oil.

To reduce the appearance of stretch marks with coconut oil, all you have to do is massage the oil on either new or old stretch marks before bedtime, and rinse it off in the morning. Coconut oil contains saturated fats which work to fight free radicals and remove stretch marks fast.

You should look for unrefined, extra virgin and cold-pressed coconut oil as a remedy for stretch marks.

How to use onions for stretch marks

Recently, I read about a cream containing onion extract that is being touted as the best cream for old stretch marks. What puzzles me is in the past, there were lots of ladies that had tried onion as a remedy for stretch marks and said that it worked wonders. Almost everyone either ignored them or discounted the claims, just as they have done with toothpaste for stretchmarks.

Fast forward to the current time. A study conducted by a professor from Duke University revealed that after 3 months of using the cream in which onion extract was the main ingredient, stretch marks on the participants were less noticeable on the participants.

My point is, don’t discount home remedies for most of the things in life. Work with what you have in your home and see how it works for you. Onion has now been bottled up and being sold to the same people who would normally criticise home remedies!

If you want to try the onion remedy, simply cut the onion in half and rub the cut side of the area with stretch marks, and leave it on for 20 minutes before rinsing and moisturising with petroleum jelly.

How to prevent stretch marks during pregnancy

9 out of 10 pregnant women are affected by stretch marks, mostly because of the change in hormones or the fact that the skin gets super stretched. The stretch marks usually appear just at the end of the first trimester or during the second trimester. The good news is you can actually minimise the stretch marks during pregnancy by applying cocoa butter for stretch marks or bio-oil, from the moment you find out you are pregnant or the time you notice them popping up.

Final thoughts on how to reduce the appearance of stretch marks

There are of course other remedies for getting rid of stretch marks out there but the ones I have highlighted here have been proven to work.

I have also heard that you can get rid of stretch marks by rubbing peeled raw potatoes onto the affected areas or use aloe Vera and vitamin E creams. If your pocket allows, you can even go as far as getting laser treatment to remove the stretch marks.

If your stretch marks are severe and you feel like you have tried just about anything on earth to get them to fade, you should be kind and also patient with yourself. Try one remedy for at least 6 months to see how your skin responds. Remember, there are different skin types and each one of us responds to creams differently, and this is how you should look at your stretch marks.

Importantly, you can just accept the fact that you will always have those tiger stripes. Besides, some of the top fashion models that we usually use as beauty yardsticks, have stretch marks, you just need to look at them closely.

The only reason we don’t see their stripes is that their images are wonderfully and expertly airbrushed.

Still, I know women go mad for Bio Oil, it appears to work wonders. I am not surprised to learn that coconut oil helps decrease stretch marks. I’ve used coconut oil since I was a child, my family makes their own since I can remember. It has so many good uses!

  13. I used coconut oil twice a day from the moment I found out I was pregnant. I wanted the oil to get absorbed by the deep layers of the skin by the time my belly started to stretch. From about the 5th month I started drinking collagen type 1 & 3. And I didn’t get any stretch marks whatsoever.
